Comprehensive School Counseling Program
My mission at Forest View Elementary School is to meet the individual needs of all students. With a focus on academic, personal/social, and career development, students will be able to achieve at their greatest potential intellectually, socially and emotionally in all their future goals.
The School Counselor believes:*all students should have access to the school counseling program |
The School Counseling program is:*based on the needs of students, teachers, parents, and administrators |
Classroom Guidance
The schedule for classroom guidance is dependent on grade level. Possible methods of delivery include: counselor-led whole group instruction, group work, puppet shows, picture books, computer lab, art activities, role play, and mini-lessons.
Possible themes include: introduction to the school counselor, character education, social skills, bullying prevention, conflict resolution, understanding feelings, multi-cultural awareness, self-control, test anxiety, learning styles, career development, middle school transition, ...
Group Counseling
Counseling groups are formed when a need is determined by the counselor, teachers, parents, or students. Groups typically consist of 4-6 students, meeting 6 weeks, during their lunch time. Before a group begins, parent permission is granted and goals are developed. Topics for groups can vary greatly and are dependent on the students' needs. Groups in which I have experience include new student, academic, friendship, girls' issues, Hispanic girls' identity and test anxiety.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling is available for students in helping with their personal, social, and academic needs. Students can be self-referred, by teachers, or by parents. Counseling is a service of the school and, therefore, offered to all students. If parents wish to not allow their child to receive counseling services, they need to inform the school counselor or other school staff.
My goals in individual counseling are to work with students' strengths to develop skills and empower them to create and implement their own goals, to collaborate with parents and teachers to address their concerns and make positive changes, and to refer to community resources when it is in the best interest of the child and family.
Parent & Teacher ConsultationParents and teachers may contact the school counselor to discuss concerns for a student or to ask for strategies to help a student. Reasons for consultation may include but are not limited to: academic performance, behavior, death of a loved one, changes in the family environment (divorce, new sibling, health, moving), social concerns, child's special needs, etc. Please contact the school counselor at [email protected] or 560-3932 to assist you. |
ConfidentialityConfidentiality is an important component of the counseling relationship. However, students are informed at the beginning of the counseling relationship that if they reveal they wish to do harm to themselves, someone is harming them, or someone else's safety is threatened, confidentiality will be broken. In addition, students are encouraged to share with their parent and/or teachers, or the counselor will ask for permission to share if it is relevant to a third party. |
